Coach Beasley's *Spooktacular* Week in Review - Halloween Edition

The highlight of the week was the wrestle-offs that were held on Saturday.  In conjunction with wrestle-offs, World Wide Sport Supply hosted a free coaches clinic.  There were several high school, junior high school, and elementary school coaches in attendance, as well as friends and family of BU Wrestling.  We had a good crowd and a great social afterwards.  I was able to meet a lot of parents, friends, and family of the wrestlers which was a great experience for me.  I want to say thank you to everyone that helped make the social a great event, especially Colleen Schiedel for organizing everything.

Now on to wrestle-offs.  Dan Riggi (133 lbs. redshirt sophomore) coached the black team and Nate Schiedel (184 pounds redshirt junior) coached the grey team.  Schiedel definitely out-dressed Riggi but Riggi got the team win.

The first match was 125 pounds between Mike Sardo and Brian St. James.  The two traded escapes but it was Sardo with the takedown late in the third period that sealed the win 3-1.  Sardo did a nice job keeping steady pressure and staying on the attack.  Sardo got the black team ahead 3-0.

Patrick Hunter beat Tyler Pendergast at 133 pounds.  Hunter controlled most of the match and was in on several shots but only scored two takedowns.  Pendergast scored a takedown late in the match to tie the score but Hunter already had riding time locked up to get the win 5-4.  Hunter had some very nice shots but needs to finish more of them.  The black team moved to 6-0.

At 141 pounds, two true freshmen squared off:  Joe Bonaldi and Derak Heyman.  Bonaldi scored the first takedown on the edge of the mat.  Heyman quickly escaped.  Second period, Heyman scored an escape and tied the score up 2-2.  The third period was still deadlocked at two before Bonaldi scored an escape.  Bonaldi scored two late takedowns in the match (the last was off a desperation headlock attempt by Heyman).  Bonaldi won 7-4 and the black team moved ahead 9-0.

Donnie Vinson was on the attack from the opening whistle against Joe Chamish at 149 pounds.  Vinson looked outstanding and dominated the match by 21-5 technical fall in the second period.  Vinson was constantly attacking and scoring on top.  He looked like he can beat anyone in the country with his intensity and attacks.  Vinson go the grey team on the board but black kept their lead 9-5.

Justin Lister looked like he was ready to win a national title after technical falling Angelo Bortoluzzi in the first period.  Lister was dominating on top with one turn after another.  Brotoluzzi fought off his back hard but was unable to do anything with the former All-American.  Lister moved the black score to 14-5.

At 165 pounds, Matt Kaylor tech falled Adam Morris.  Kaylor looked very good and is in a position to have a great senior year.  His far side shots looked unstoppable and his hand fighting is very good.  The Vinson, Lister, and Kaylor combination right in the middle weights will be hard for any team to compete with.  Kaylor’s technical fall put the grey team within four points 10-14.

At 174 pounds, Caleb Wallace beat John Paris.  Paris shot a double with his arms out and Wallace threw him by for a takedown in the beginning of the match.  Wallace scored two more takedowns on short offense.  Wallace won 8-3 and the black team went ahead 17-10.

At 197 pounds, Tyler Deuel came out strong and scored the first takedown with funk.  However, Cody Reed scored a takedown right at the end of the first period to go ahead 3-2.  Reed scored with a couple of singles and a couple of double leg takedowns to win 11-3.  The major gave the black team a 21-10 lead.

Gwiazdowski was absolutely dominating in his match with Mike McKeever.  McKeever bumped up to heavyweight for the match and fought hard but had no answer for Gwiazdowski.  Gwiazdowksi scored in nearly every position and will be a great heavyweight closer for dual meets.  Gwiazdowski eventually got the technical fall in the third period.  The black team pulled ahead for good 26-10.

Derek Steeley won the last match of the afternoon with a technical fall in the first period over Mike Sardo.  Steeley scored his takedown about ten seconds into the match.  He wrestled very well on top and scored several turns out of legs.  The final team score was 26-15 black.

Watch for several of our guys to compete at the Buffalo Open on Sunday, which I will discuss later this week.

Wrestle-Off Preview!

We will have some exciting matches at our wrestle-offs this Saturday.  Doors will open to the public at about 11:45AM on Saturday.  Before I get in the wrestle-off preview, I want to mention that the guys not wrestling off are planned redshirts this year.  Some of them may end up not redshirting and some of the guys that are wrestling off may redshirt but that final determination has not yet been made.

125 - This is the only weight class that will feature two matches at our wrestle-offs.  Mike Sardo and Brian St. James will wrestle to determine who will compete against Derek Steeley for the starting spot.  Sardo, a true freshman, was a two-time New York State Qualifier and 6th place finisher in high school.  St. James is a redshirt freshman who transferred from Indiana University after redshirting there last year.  He placed 5th at the Eastern Michigan Open last season in limited action and was an two-time state champion and three-time state finalist in high school.  Steeley is the returning starter at this weight class.  He came to BU in the spring semester last year from Neosho Junior College.  He finished in the top 12 at the NJCAA (junior college) National Championships as a true freshman.  He went 21-14 overall last year and took 4th in the CAA.

133 - Tyler Pendergast and Patrick Hunter will battle for the starting spot at 133 pounds.  Pendergast is a true freshman who was 6th at NHSCA Senior Nationals and a three-time Delaware State Champion.  Hunter is a redshirt junior.  He won the NJCAA National Title as a true freshman at Iowa Central Community College in 2009.  He redshirted in the 2009-2010 season and then was the starter at Iowa State in 2010-2011, where he went 4-7 in limited action.  He is moving up to 133 this year as he wrestled at 125 pounds each of his previous years.

141 - This should be a great match between two promising true freshmen.  Derek Heyman and Joe Bonaldi both enter BU with great accomplishments.  Heyman was a top-150 recruit last year, as well as a two-time New York State Champion, and four-time NHSCA All-American.  Bonaldi placed 3rd and 4th in the state tournament in New York and qualified three times to the state tournament.

149 - This is a weight class in which both of the wrestlers competing have collegiate experience.  Donnie Vinson is the returning starter.  He is ranked in the top 10 in the country in virtually every poll.  He is a two-time National Qualifier, two-time CAA Runner-Up, placed 8th at the University World Greco Championships, and had a record of 26-6 last year.  Joe Chamish is coming off a redshirt and is a redshirt freshman.  He has made big gains in the last year and is in the best shape of his life after wrestling at 157 and 165 last year, where he won ten matches.

157 - Justin Lister returns to 157 pounds after wrestling the second half of last season at 165 pounds.  Lister is a returning All-American (4th in 2010), 2X CAA Champion, 2X National Qualifier, and finished last year with a 23-8 record.  He is ranked in the top ten in the country.  He will be challenged by Angelo Bortoluzzi, a true freshman.  Bortoluzzi placed 4th at the National Prep Championships, won the Clinch Gear Prep Slam, and placed 5th at the Beast of the East last year.

165 - Matt Kaylor will be challenged by true freshman Adam Morris.  Kaylor is a nationally ranked, two-time national qualifier.  He won the CAA Championships this past season and finished the year with a 28-11 record.  Morris placed 5th at the National Prep Championships, 3rd at the Cheesehead Tournament twice, and third and second in the Pennsylvania Prep State Championships.

174 - This weight class should prove to be a great battle between two very hard workers.  John Paris is the reigning CAA Rookie of the Year after finishing 2nd at the CAA Championships at 197 last season.  He is down to a more natural weight this year and is looking to improve upon his 20-12 record from a year ago.  Caleb Wallace is a redshirt freshman who won the New York State Collegiate Championship and finished the year with an 11-6 record.  Both of these guys will see a lot of action this year in the BU line-up.

184 - Nate Schiedel will start again at 184 pounds.  He is nationally ranked, two-time national qualifier, CAA Champion, and two-time CAA finalist.  He won both the Penn State Open and the New York State Collegiate Championships last season.  Schiedel finished the year with a 32-9 record and lead the team in both wins and pins.  He will not have a wrestle-off this weekend.

197 - Cody Reed is a returning starter that split time between 197 and heavyweight last year.  He finished the year with a 22-14 record and landed a spot on the CAA All-Freshman Team after placing 1st at the New York State Collegiate, 3rd at the BU Open, and 6th at the body Bar Tournament.  Tyler Deuel will challenge Reed for the starting spot.  He is a true freshman who finished in the top 12 at the NHSCA Senior Nationals.  He also placed 3rd in New York State with a 44-1 record and 40 pins.

Hwt - True freshman, Nick Gwiazdowski, will start at heavyweight.  Gwiazdowski was undefeated his senior year and did not have a match go the distance  (including the off-season).  He pinned his way through both New York State and the NHSCA Senior Nationals.  He also won the FloNational Championship.  Mike McKeever will bump-up to heavyweight for the wrestle-offs and wrestle Gwiazdowski.  Watch for McKeever to compete at 197 pounds once the season starts.  McKeever is a seasoned veteran of the BU Wrestling program (redshirt junior).  He competed in ten matches last season.

Dan Riggi (redshirt sophomore) will coach the black team, while Nate Schiedel (redshirt junior) will coach the grey team.  Here are the line-ups and order for Saturday's wrestle-offs.

Match #1 (125) - Sardo (black) vs. St. James (grey)
Match #2 (133) - Hunter (black) vs Pendergast (grey)
Match #3 (141) - Bonaldi (black) vs Heyman (grey)
Match #4 (149) - Chamish (black) vs Vinson (grey)
Match #5 (157) - Lister (black) vs Bortoluzzi (grey)
Match #6 (165) - Morris (black) vs Kaylor (grey)
Match #7 (174) - Wallace (black) vs Paris (grey)
Match #8 (197) - Reed (black) vs Deuel (grey)
Match  #9 (HWT) - Gwiazdowski (black) vs McKeever (grey)
Match #10 (125) - Winner of Sardo/St. James (black) vs Steeley (grey)

Another important note, Mark Morris of PAWR (www.pawrvideo.com) will be filming the wrestle-offs and you will be able to view them for free on his website.

Coach Beasley's Week in Review 10.24.11

We had a great first week of practice.  We spent all  week improving our defense and working on bottom.  We feel like those are two key areas that we need to spend a lot of time on as a team.  The majority of our technique this week was spent on defensive positioning.  We need to be able to score when our opponents shoot on us and we are certainly improving in that area as a team.   Our technique was focused on defending singles and high crotches but we also worked  on when the opponent has your leg up in the air, between his legs, and when he is in on a low single. We drilled these positions and spent a decent amount of time drilling on bottom.

Bottom position is always where the majority of freshman need to make their biggest improvements.  With a large incoming class, we needed to emphasize bottom everyday.  We were focused on getting to our feet off of bottom this week.  Our team as a whole is very good on top, so the guys were able to make their partners work hard and gave them a realistic feel for getting off bottom.

Wednesday, we wrestled live in groups of three and went two minute live goes.  On Thursday, we wrestled two minute live goes followed by thirty seconds on top and thirty seconds on bottom then would switch partners and do the same thing.  We had a lot of partner switches so the guys got a lot of different looks and feels when they went live.  On Friday, our live consisted of match-length periods.  Saturday, we drilled hard for about 45 minutes.  We spent 10 minutes on offense, 10 minutes on bottom, 10 minutes on defense, and 15 minutes on sparring and simulated live drilling.  After the Saturday drill, we ran the guys through a team lift in addition to the lift that they did on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Sunday, the team had a brutal workout and they are sore today.  This week, we will have our three morning lifts and will practice on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.  Saturday is our wrestle-off and they will start around 11:50AM in the West Gym.  The Wrestle-Offs will be open to the public and we encourage all to attend.  We are planning on having about a dozen matches Saturday.  I will provide a more in depth preview of wrestle-offs later this week.  Stay tuned!

Coach Popolizio's Fall Newsletter (10/13)

Pre-Season

The Bearcats just about finished their six week pre-season this morning.  The format for this year’s pre-season was much like years past: morning practices on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6:30 am and optional wrestling practices in the afternoons Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Morning workouts started with a 45 minute lift, followed by varying cardio workouts, including stairs, buddy carries, sprints, hills, and long-distance runs.  The difference between this year’s pre-season and last year’s….intensity!  We have a great group of athletes that are self-motivated to better themselves.  The upper classmen have set a great pace that is pushing everybody to a higher level.  The freshman are running with it and trying to win everything they do, pushing the older guys to an even higher level.  It has been really great to see!

The optional afternoon practices have been great, with nearly all team members participating.  The practices have been about an hour long, and most team members have been drilling for about 30 minutes and wrestling live for 30 minutes.  The technique has varied, but most of the team has focused on drilling defense and hand-fighting.  Live wrestling continues to change almost daily, sometimes wrestling one 30 minute match, or wrestling 30 minutes of different situations.

Some Notable Pre-Season Accomplishments:

Justin Lister- We had three one mile runs and Justin finished first in every single one.  He finished under 5:40 for each one.

Joe Bonaldi- After finishing various sprints for a total of three miles, Joe was the only person on the team to successfully baby carry his partner without putting him down for 1 lap on the track.

Joe Chamish- After never finishing higher than third to last in a run as a freshman, Joe is not only competing to win sprints now, he is winning sprints.

Binghamton Bearcats- The team has really matured. Team members are now holding other members accountable if they are not trying 100%. They are pushing each other to reach their highest potential.

Flooding

As many of you know, the Binghamton area was hit by record breaking floods in early September that caused an estimated 1 billion dollars of damage.  Many people in the surrounding area were left homeless for weeks, and had to live in various shelters set-up by the local community.

The wrestling team lent a helping hand to the community, helping close down a Red Cross Shelter at Johnson City High School, and relocating those individuals still there to the University’s Event Center.  The wrestling team was also responsible for loading up trucks with donated goods and unloading them to a local Christian missionary set-up for flood relief.  Here is the link for the article posted on the NCAA website: http://www.ncaa.com/news/wrestling/article/2011-10-02/lending-hand-time-need

Many members of the Binghamton Wrestling family were also affected by the devastating floods.  Members of the team helped one supporter of our program strip the drywall out of his basement.  Other members of the team helped a supporter move furniture out of their flood stricken home.  Here is the link for the article posted on the BU Bearcats website:

This past weekend, six members of the team, Cody Reed, Tyler Deuel, Brian St. James, Nate Schiedel, John Paris, and Ben Price, traveled to Tioga to help a member of the Volleyball team whose house was devastated by the flood.

CAA All Freshman Team

Congratulations to Freshman Derak Heyman (141lbs), Adam Morris (165lbs), Tyler Deuel (197lbs), and Nick Gwiazdowski (HWT) for making the CAA All-Freshman Team.  The Bearcats had the most members on the team at 4, followed by ODU with 3, George Mason with 2, and Hofstra with 1.

CAA Pre-Season Rankings

Currently the Binghamton Bearcats sit in second place behind Hofstra.  The wrestling team has 8 members ranked.
            125-Derek Steeley- 3rd
            133-Patrick Hunter- 4th
            149-Donnie Vinson- 2nd
            157-Justin Lister- 1st
            165-Matt Kaylor- 3rd
            174-John Paris- 3rd
            184-Nate Schiedel- 2nd
            197-Cody Reed- 3rd

Blog

As the Binghamton Wrestling team continues to grow each year as a program, we continue to receive overwhelming support from our friends and alumni.  Many of our friends and alumni have asked for a better way to keep up-to-date with the wrestling team, and anything relevant on our student-athletes.  Thanks to some serious help from Lyndsey Beasley (Assistant Coach Frank Beasley’s wife), we have come up with a resource to not only keep you up-to-date on rankings, and team progress, but also a media outlet that we can post videos of our current athletes and former alumni.

Currently we are featuring two ongoing segments called, Two Minute Tuesdays with Patrick Hunter and Throwback Thursday.  For those that have not seen Two Minute Tuesdays, we have got some great feedback.  Patrick is a transfer from Iowa State University and is looking to start at 133lbs this year.  After only a short-time, it became apparent that if we were going to do one feature every week, it had to involve Patrick.  He brings a great new dynamic to the team.  He is extremely intense, but also knows when to crack some jokes and break the tension.  For those that have not seen the video, check it out on our blog!

Throwback Thursday is just starting now.  The video will interview former wrestlers and coaches from the team, and get their perspective on their time as a student-athlete at Binghamton, and what they are doing now that they aren’t competing.  This week’s episode features 2011 graduates Dan Bittner and Ryan McGarity.  Catch up with them on this week’s Throwback Thursday!

Alumni Support

Thank you to those alumni who have continued to support our team!  Our goal this year is to hit $50,000 in fundraised money.  This money goes such a long way in helping our wrestlers.  It allows the team to compete outside of the Northeast, and seek the best competition available.  This year we will be traveling to Oklahoma State and the Reno Tournament of Champions.  In order to beat the best, we have to face the best! Our main objectives are to add 50 new donors this year and reconnect with alumni and friends of Binghamton Wrestling.  With continued support, we are able to move our program forward and compete at a higher level.

Please reach out to former teammates and see if they would be interested in joining our efforts.   If each alumnus is able to connect with a former teammate, our goals can become much more attainable.  If you know anybody (friend, family, and teammate) that wants to be added to our email list, please let me know.

In order to donate to the wrestling program, please click on the account tab.  When the tab comes up, please select “Other, Please Specify”.  Thank you for all your support!

Coach Beasley's Week in Review

This past week was our last week of preseason workouts.  The guys finished the preseason on a great note and were working extremely hard.  I feel like the team is in great shape and had a very productive preseason.  Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, we had open room workouts in the afternoons.  On Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings, we had a lift followed by a run.  On Monday we ran a lot of sprints.  We ran a variety of sprints from 100 yards to 400 yards, with a ton of short sprints.  We did some wheelbarrows, buddy carries, lifts, etc.  On Wednesday, we ran a longer distance run after the lift.  The run was up a long incline hill, followed by a loop through campus.  Justin Lister won the run, with Alex Neal right on his heels.  Following them were, Colton Perry, Donnie Vinson, Derek Heyman in that order.  On Thursday, lifted, followed by an hour run. The run on Thursday started with two quarter miles sprints, followed by a one mile run.  From there, they went into a quarter of a mile sprint directly to a hand fight for a mile and a half worth of work.  Then, we did 100 yard sprints, 200 yard reverse body lock lift buddy carries, then hand fighting.  Derek Heyman stood out on Friday by winning more sprints than he ever has; while Derek Steeley, Donnie Vinson, Nate Schiedel, Nick Gwiazdowski, and Tyler Deuel did a great job with their reverse lifts.

We took Friday off, as well as today and tomorrow.  Wednesday, we will have our official first day of practice.  They look great going into the season and we are poised to have a very good year.  Next Monday, my review will be much more wrestling centered as we start practicing in the room.
