November Updates

Bearcat Wrestling Fans-
Here is a recap of what happened in the past month.  For more results, be sure to check out the "dual results" tab!

Bearcat Open
We opened our season with the Bearcat Open, bringing over 400 wrestlers from 30 teams across the nation to Binghamton campus.  Junior Joe Bonaldi placed third place in the 149 weight class (shown to the left).  Along with Bonaldi, David White (125 lb.) and Tyler Deuel (HWT) placed fourth place.  This was a great experience for the team and our freshman to wrestle against
some of the top teams in the nation.  Check out the Results tab for the Final Brackets.

East Stroudsburg Open
We sent several individuals to wrestle at the East Stroudsburg Open and saw some great results.  Sophomore 174 lb. Jack McKeever won all six out of six matches and placed first in his weight class (to the right), defeating Adam Mackie of Lock Haven to take home the crown.  Freshman 133-pound Nick Tighe also had a strong showing, winning four of five matches to place third. Tighe opened with a pin and then put eight points on the board in successive matches to reach the semifinals. After a 5-3 loss to the eventual champion from Lock Haven, Tighe closed his day with a 12-3 major decision over Hofstra’s Kyle Krasavage in the third-place bout.

New York State Intercollegiate Championship @ Ithaca

Binghamton wrestling produced eight placewinners and finished a strong third out of 24 teams.  Heavyweight Tyler Deuel (to the left) placed first with two pins and two techfalls (4-0).  Binghamton also had three wrestlers take third place: freshman 133-pound Nick Tighe, junior 184-pound Calleb Wallace and senior 197-pound Cody Reed.  Three wrestlers took fourth place- Junior 149-pound Joe Bonaldi, junior 125-pound David White and redshirt freshman Dylan Caruana (141 lbs).  We had a lot of great pins and individual wins- check out the full results by clicking the "results" tab!

Journeymen Duals in Albany
Binghamton wrestling went 1-2 at the Journeymen/ASICS Northeast Duals over Thanksgiving break. The Bearcats lost to North Carolina (22-14) and NC State (23-9) before rallying to defeat George Mason (21-14) in the team’s final dual of the event.  Cody Reed went a perfect 3-0 on the day and Tyler Deuel went 2-1 with the decisive pin against George Mason.  Check out the highlights from the Journeymen Duals below!

Binghamton wrestling falls to Hofstra, 23-19, on Senior Day

Sunday marked the last home appearance for five seniors during the dual meet against Hofstra University.

Senior Day brought in a full crowd to the West Gym as we watched seniors Patrick Hunter, Donnie Vinson, Nate Schiedel, Dan Riggi, and Derek Steeley walk up with their families and coaches to get recognized.

The Bearcats started off slowly, dropping their first three bouts.  Senior and captain Donnie Vinson was the first win of the afternoon, with a first-period pin against Sophomore Cody Ruggirello.  Watch the video below to see Donnie's pin, it's a must-see.

After Vinson's pin, the Bearcats dropped another three bouts before junior 184-pound Cody Reed notched a 15-5 major decision.

Following Reed, Senior and captain Nate Schiedel cradled up junior Tim Murphy and had him pinned within a minute and fifteen seconds.  Schiedel's pin is included in the video below as well.

Ending the dual, heavyweight Tyler Deuel had a 12-8 major decision, leaving the final score of the match 19-23, coming short just by a few team points.

Donnie Vinson and Nate Schiedel remain undefeated in dual meets (both 17-0).  The Bearcats will have their final dual meet of the season next Thursday against Bloomsburg.  After this, our wrestlers will be preparing for the CAA Championship in Boston on March 9.

Vinson pins for his 124th career win: School's all-time wins leader

Despite the loss against Old Dominion on Friday, Donnie Vinson set a school record after his first-period pin against Brennan Brumley.  Donnie Vinson, gaining his 124th victory, now holds the school's record for most career wins.

Vinson's overall record is 124-15.  He remains unbeaten in dual matches this season (15-0) and is 25-1 overall.  He is ranked No.5 in the latest InterMat poll, is 69-8 in career duals and is positioned at No.3 in the first NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings.

“Donnie becoming Binghamton Wrestling’s all time wins leader is quite a significant accomplishment,” head coach Matt Dernlan said. “To attain an achievement of this level, speaks to his ability early on in his career to beat the best in the country and sustain that level throughout the duration of his career. More important that his win total, we are very proud of how he has represented Binghamton with class and dignity, while wearing the Green and Black. I know this moment means a lot to him, personally, but his focus now is to finish his career, by chasing down his ultimate goals in March.”

Check out "Dual Results" tab for entire team's performance against Old Dominion.  Next match is on February 3rd against American.

CAA Duals: Binghamton defeats Drexel and George Mason

Winning two out of three duals, the Bearcats defeated Drexel 29-14 and the host Patriots 29-13 before losing to Rider 19-15 in the round-robin format, which will help determine the weight-class seeds for the CAA Championship in early March.

After being named the CAA Wrestler of the Week after going undefeated at the Virginia Duals, No.6 Nate Schiedel certainly proved he deserved this title by once again defeating all of his opponents at the CAA duals.

Mike Sardo (125), Dereck Steeley (131), Donnie Vinson (149) and Tyler Deuel (Hwt.) also remained unbeaten at Fairfax.

Check out the "dual results" tab for more information or a full post can be found here.

Virginia Duals Recap

The Bearcats headed over to Hampton, VA this weekend to wrestle in the 33rd edition of the prestigious Virginia Duals.

Starting off on Friday, their first match against No. 10 Virginia Tech ended in a 32-9 loss.  The winning bouts came from the nationally ranked duo, Donnie Vinson and Nate Schiedel.  Vinson, ranked no.7 at 149, had a strong win against Nick Brascetta (No.6).  Although previously losing to Brascetta at the Midlands, Vinson showed dominance with a decision of 6-3.  Schiedel (ranked No.6) showed dominance as well, pinning Derrick Borlie in the second period, using a bear hug to drive Borlie to the mat.

In consolation round 1, Binghamton wrestled, and defeated Virginia Military Institute.  The Bearcats won seven out of ten matches against VMI; one pin, two tech falls, three decisions, and one forfeit ultimately gained them 31 points.  Tyler Deuel ended the match with nothing better but a first-period pin against Michael LaPrade in only 52 seconds.

On Saturday, the team wrestled North Dakota State.  The Bearcats were knocked out of the tournament after this 12-30 loss.  Thanks to a pin by Schiedel and an accepted forfeit by Vinson, the dynamic duo kept us on the board once again.
