Penn won six out of the ten bouts to post a 22-13 win over the Bearcats on Friday night at The Palestra. Our four defeats came from David White, Dylan Caruana, Cody Reed, and Tyler Deuel. Here's a quick recap of those wins:
At 125, starter David White (7-2 in duals, 17-6 overall) won the first bout of the night with a 6-2 decision over Jeremy Schwartz.
At 149, Dylan Caruana relentlessly beat AJ Murabito 8-7 after having to catch up from being setback 2-6 in the first period. Caruana scored twice in the third period with a late takedown to secure the win.
At 197, a rematch between Cody Reed and Frank Mattiace was a success for the Bearcats as Reed won 4-3, to even the season series at 1-1. Mattiace had the first takedown, but Reed tied the match with a takedown disputed for being on the edge of the mat late in the third period. Penn asked for the call to be reviewed, and after checking replay the call was upheld in favor of Reed. Reed ultimately won after making an escape in the third period.
Tyler Deuel closed the dual with a 12-2 major decision over Steven Graziano. After Graziano scored the opening takedown 15 seconds in, Deuel rallied back, led by a five-point move in the final seconds of the first period.
