Reed went 2-2 at the NCAA; 2013-2014 Season Final Thoughts
Senior 197-pound Cody Reed
came up one win short of All-American honors in Friday evening’s
session of the NCAA Championship at the Chesapeake Engery Arena.
After advancing to the quarterfinals with a pair of wins on Thursday, Reed, a red-shirt senior, fell in both his matches on Friday to end Binghamton’s run at the NCAA Championship. Reed fell to No. 1 Nick Heflin of Ohio State in the quarterfinals of the championship bracket before losing to No. 3 Morgan McIntosh of Penn State in the wrestle-backs of the consolation bracket.
With an All-American spot on the line Reed fell to McIntosh by major decision, 13-4. McIntosh secured a pair of first-period take downs to take a 4-0 lead into the second frame. Reed was able to escape a McIntosh leg-lock to record his first point, but another takedown by the No. 3 seed gave McIntosh a 7-1 lead heading into the final three minutes. In the final period, Reed was again able escape McIntosh’s grasp but another takedown and riding time gave the Nittany Lion the victory and All-American status.
Reed, who went 2-2 at the NCAA Championship, finishes his career at Binghamton with a record of 94-62 and completes the 2013-14 season with a record of 29-12. Reed became just the second Binghamton wrestler to win his first two matches of the NCAA Championship and advance to the quarterfinals. The Walton, N.Y. native is a three-time NCAA qualifier and compiled a record of 4-6 at three NCAA Championships.

Final Thoughts on the Season
This is the first year we competed in the EIWA Conference Championship. We went from the smallest conference in the country, to the largest and second toughest conference. This was a huge adjustment for our team. We saw a different level of wrestling from the very start of the year to the very end. With everything new, we had some growing pains. But the coaching staff saw a marked and consistent improvement in our wrestlers from the beginning of the season to the end.

We
were picked to finish 14th out of 18 teams that made up the EIWA. We
finished 7th, putting 5 guys on the stand. We would have liked to get more guys out to the
big dance, but not going to nationals has left an empty pit in stomachs
of our wrestlers and I know they will use that as motivation to reach
their goals during the 2014/2015 season.
#9, #8, #1, #3- That was the order of
wrestlers that Cody Reed faced to get to the Round of 12 at this years
NCAA Championships. He wrestled four seeded wrestlers and beat two of
them. Cody Reed was 18-16 last year and 0-2
at the NCAA Championships. This year he finished 29-12.
David
White went 1-2 at this year's Championship. Last year he wasn't a
starter and went 17-7 during the year. This year he went 27-13 and beat
four kids he lost to last year- seeing huge improvement.
Other Notable Improvements
Jack
Mckeever- His Division I record went from 2-18 during the 2013/2014
season to 18-14 and a national ranking before a serious injury sidelined
him for the second half of the year.
Caleb Wallace- His last years record was 6-6. This year he finished 17-15 and placed in the EIWA conference.
Vincent Grella- He tripled the number of wins he had the previous year and he placed in the EIWA conference.
Tyler Deuel- Tyler went from a .500 wrestler last year, to a record of 28-10 this year and he earned a
Top 20 ranking.

Read the full article about the EIWA results here.
The NCAA Championship will take place next weekend, March 20-22, in Oklahoma City. The brackets have been released and you can view them here. Cody Reed, making his 3rd consecutive NCAA appearance, will be facing ace ninth-seeded Christian Boley of Maryland in the opening round.
The pairing is a rematch of the 2012 NCAA Championship first round, when Reed posted a shocking 2-1 upset over then-No. 4 Boley. Last weekend, Reed made a strong showing at the EIWA Championship, winning three of four matches to earn an automatic bid. He posted a major decision in the first round and then recorded a dramatic pin in overtime over fellow NCAA qualifier James Fox of Harvard in the quarterfinals to seal his return trip to the national championship. Reed has four wins against the NCAA field. Boley (22-4) was the No. 1 seed at the ACC Championship but placed fourth.
White (26-11) will make his first NCAA Championship appearance and has drawn 12th-seeded Tim Lambert of Nebraska in the opening round. Lambert (22-11), a redshirt freshman, placed fifth at the Big Ten Championship. White went 4-2 at the EIWA Championship to finish fourth and claim an automatic berth.

Bearcats defeat Boston University today 23-17; Deuel and Reed continue their win streaks
Binghamton wrestling used four straight wins to rally past fellow
EIWA member Boston University (3-8) 23-18 Sunday at West Gym. The
Bearcats (4-10) trailed 15-4 halfway through the match before two pins
and a major decision fueled the comeback. Four of Binghamton’s five
match wins produced bonus points.
“The guys really stepped up today,” head coach Matt Dernlan said. “We’ve been in similar situations lately but have come up short. We knew it was looking like a 5-5 match split so bonus points were going to be critical. It was a great effort and the guys have earned this by believing and pushing forward. Now we want to keep building this momentum.”
Junior 184-pound Caleb Wallace (12-11, 6-8 duals) got things going with a third-period pin. Wallace was in control and racking up points toward a major decision when he threw Aaron Conrad to his back and ended the bout at 5:58.
Senior 197-pound Cody Reed (21-8 overall, 11-3 duals) followed with a commanding 21-9 major decision that featured back points in the third period. Reed’s win extended his win streak to eight and brought the Bearcats to within one, 15-14.
Junior heavyweight Tyler Deuel kept the momentum going with his team-high ninth pin of the
season. He led 3-1 toward the end of the second period when he locked up a cradle on Kevin Innis near the edge of the mat and ended the bout with six seconds left in the period.
“Tyler has put in the work and is now reaping the benefits,” Dernlan said of his heavyweight, who has ended 14 bouts this season by tech fall or fall. His five tech falls is the most of any 285-pounder in the country.
Deuel, ranked 31st in the first NCAA Coaches’ Panel Rankings, won his 11th straight dual match and raised his record to 23-5 overall, 12-2 in duals.
Those six points gave Binghamton a 20-15 lead and junior 125-pound David White (20-7 overall, 10-4 duals) clinched the win with a hard-fought 9-6 decision over Tyler McGinley. White, ranked No. 32, was knotted at 6-6 and giving up riding time before escaping to start the third. He then scored the deciding takedown with 36 seconds left and finished on top to erase riding time.
Binghamton’s other winner was junior 149-pound Joe Bonaldi (12-7 overall, 4-5 duals), who racked up eight takedowns in a 19-8 major decision.

The win, Deuel’s team-high 22nd of the season (22-5, 11-2 duals), brought the crowd to its feet and gave the Bearcats a 16-9 lead. It was his team-high eighth pin of the season, to go along with five tech falls - the most techs of any heavyweight in the nation. Deuel entered the bout ranked 31st in the NCAA Coaches’ Panel and Herrin was No. 23.
Also winning for BU were sophomore 165-pound Vincent Grella, junior 184-pound Caleb Wallace and freshman 141-pound Nick Tighe. Tighe continued his strong rookie campaign with an 11-5 win, improving to 22-16 overall. Tighe's win brought the match score to 19-18 before the very last match.
Junior 125-pound David White nearly pulled off an upset of No. 11 David Terao but surrendered riding time in a tight 3-2 loss. White, who had a nine-match win streak entering the day, was working for a match-clinching takedown in the waning seconds of a 2-2 bout but ran out of time.
