Binghamton’s Gwiazdowski, Bonaldi Share Rookie of Week Award
LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ—With all of the accomplishments taking place at the annual CAA Duals, there are plenty of awards to go around this week.
Justin Accordino of Hofstra University, John Nicholson of Old Dominion University and Donnie Vinson of Binghamton University are the Colonial Athletic Association Wrestlers of the Week for all competition January 17-23.
Binghamton freshmen Nick Gwiazdowski and Joe Bonaldi share the CAA Rookie of the Week award.
Accordino, a junior 149 from Wilkes-Barre, PA (Coughlin), went 4-0 last week, 3-0 at the CAA Duals. Unranked in the CAA prior to the duals, Accordino defeated the fourth ranked CAA wrestler and also picked up a pin and a tech fall to improve to 7-1 in duals.
Nicholson, a sophomore 157 from Des Moines, Iowa (Theodore Roosevelt), went 4-0 at the CAA Duals with a pair of tech falls. Ranked fourth in the CAA, Nicholson defeated the third ranked CAA 157 from Hofstra to improve to 19-5 overall.
Vinson, a junior 149 from Marathon, NY (Whitney Point), went 3-0 at the CAA Duals with a first period pin and a pair of second period tech falls. Vinson improved to 25-3 overall and is ranked fourth by InterMat and by Amateur Wrestling News and eighth by W.I.M. magazine.
Gwiazdowski (Delanson, NY Duanesburg High) and Bonaldi (Rochester, NY Greece Olympia High) both went 3-0 at the CAA duals and both defeated the top ranked CAA wrestler in their weight class. Gwiazdowski improved to 19-4 overall and is ranked 17th in the nation among heavyweights. Bonaldi was not ranked among the top four 141s in the CAA but improved to 4-0 in the CAA.
