Vinson pins for his 124th career win: School's all-time wins leader

Despite the loss against Old Dominion on Friday, Donnie Vinson set a school record after his first-period pin against Brennan Brumley.  Donnie Vinson, gaining his 124th victory, now holds the school's record for most career wins.

Vinson's overall record is 124-15.  He remains unbeaten in dual matches this season (15-0) and is 25-1 overall.  He is ranked No.5 in the latest InterMat poll, is 69-8 in career duals and is positioned at No.3 in the first NCAA Coaches' Panel Rankings.

“Donnie becoming Binghamton Wrestling’s all time wins leader is quite a significant accomplishment,” head coach Matt Dernlan said. “To attain an achievement of this level, speaks to his ability early on in his career to beat the best in the country and sustain that level throughout the duration of his career. More important that his win total, we are very proud of how he has represented Binghamton with class and dignity, while wearing the Green and Black. I know this moment means a lot to him, personally, but his focus now is to finish his career, by chasing down his ultimate goals in March.”

CAA Duals: Binghamton defeats Drexel and George Mason

Winning two out of three duals, the Bearcats defeated Drexel 29-14 and the host Patriots 29-13 before losing to Rider 19-15 in the round-robin format, which will help determine the weight-class seeds for the CAA Championship in early March.

After being named the CAA Wrestler of the Week after going undefeated at the Virginia Duals, No.6 Nate Schiedel certainly proved he deserved this title by once again defeating all of his opponents at the CAA duals.

Mike Sardo (125), Dereck Steeley (131), Donnie Vinson (149) and Tyler Deuel (Hwt.) also remained unbeaten at Fairfax.

Virginia Duals Recap

The Bearcats headed over to Hampton, VA this weekend to wrestle in the 33rd edition of the prestigious Virginia Duals.

Starting off on Friday, their first match against No. 10 Virginia Tech ended in a 32-9 loss.  The winning bouts came from the nationally ranked duo, Donnie Vinson and Nate Schiedel.  Vinson, ranked no.7 at 149, had a strong win against Nick Brascetta (No.6).  Although previously losing to Brascetta at the Midlands, Vinson showed dominance with a decision of 6-3.  Schiedel (ranked No.6) showed dominance as well, pinning Derrick Borlie in the second period, using a bear hug to drive Borlie to the mat.

In consolation round 1, Binghamton wrestled, and defeated Virginia Military Institute.  The Bearcats won seven out of ten matches against VMI; one pin, two tech falls, three decisions, and one forfeit ultimately gained them 31 points.  Tyler Deuel ended the match with nothing better but a first-period pin against Michael LaPrade in only 52 seconds.

On Saturday, the team wrestled North Dakota State.  The Bearcats were knocked out of the tournament after this 12-30 loss.  Thanks to a pin by Schiedel and an accepted forfeit by Vinson, the dynamic duo kept us on the board once again.
