Coach Beasley's Week in Review
Starting today, each Monday Coach Beasley will summarize the prior week's team training and progress.
We had a great week of training last week here at BU. We lifted and ran on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning at 6:30AM with our strength coach, Bryan McGovern. Bryan put the team through a great series of lifts and the guys got a lot out of it. After the lift on Monday, we ran nearly three miles of sprint laps on the track, followed by several 100 yard sprints, then lifts, and hand fighting. On Wednesday, we ran hard for about 30 minutes, followed by sprints, lifts, and hand fighting. On Friday, we ran a pyramid of sprints: a quarter mile, a half mile, three-quarters of a mile, three-quarters of a mile, a half mile, and a quarter-mile. Then we finished with lifts and hand fights.
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, we had open room workouts (we are not allowed by NCAA rules to actually run wrestling practices yet, so we have open room workouts). The guys have been working extremely hard in the open room workouts and I am seeing a ton of improvement from the team.
I have been very impressed with the team here at BU. This group of guys is by far the hardest working team that I have ever been associated with in my coaching career. In fact, i would say this is by far the hardest working team from top to bottom that I have ever been associated with. These guys are making big improvements athletically and are buying into the social lifestyles of champions.
**Check back tomorrow for another "first"... 2 Minute Tuesdays with Patrick Hunter.
**Also, make sure to tune in to Dancing with the Stars tonight at 8pm to watch long-time BU Wrestling supporter Chynna Phillips hit the dance floor!

Schedule Update and Preseason Thoughts from Coach Borshoff
Scheduling Note: Binghamton has added a dual meet with Sacred Heart to the schedule. The match will take place on November 12 (the Bearcats also take on George Mason at 3:00 that afternoon). A time for the Sacred Heart dual has yet to be determined.
Coach Jasen Borshoff shares his thoughts on the upcoming season and this year's wrestling squad.
"I am extremely excited for the 2011/2012 wrestling season to begin! I believe we have a great freshman class that's dedicated to reaching their fullest potential on the mat and in the classroom. Put this together with the great guys we have returning and I believe you have the recipe for an outstanding year! I have had the privilege of growing with the current members of the team over the last year and I know they are hungry to compete at the highest level during the course of the year. After watching our freshman and current members compete on the track, in the wrestling room, and seeing the chemistry they share outside of the room, I believe this is going to be a record-setting year for our program."

Nick Gwiazdowski Receives 2011 Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award
Gwiazdowski Receives 2011 Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award at New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Banquet
STILLWATER, Okla. — The National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum has selected its 2011 state and regional winners of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award as part of its Educational Outreach Program. Forty-nine seniors from those states that sponsor high school state wrestling championships have been chosen for the honor.
The High School Excellence Award is named in honor of the late Olympic and World Champion Dave Schultz. Each award recipient is evaluated on excellence in wrestling, scholastic achievement, character, citizenship, and community service.
“A graduate of Palo Alto High School and the University of Oklahoma, Dave Schultz was one of the most respected high school, collegiate, and international wrestlers the United States has ever had,” said Lee Roy Smith, Executive Director of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Regarded as a tireless competitor and supreme technician on the mat, Schultz was beloved throughout the world of amateur wrestling for his friendliness and eagerness to lend help or advice to teammates and opponents alike. Schultz passed away in 1996. He was inducted into the sport’s Hall of Fame as a Distinguished Member in 1997.
Since the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award’s inception in 1996, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame has recognized 677 student-wrestlers. The national award winner will be chosen from the regional winners and announced on April 21. The winner will attend the annual Hall of Fame Induction ceremony on June 8 and 9 to personally accept the award.
“These student-wrestlers are role models in their communities and influence young people in a very meaningful way,” Smith said. “Statistics show that both male and female students are more likely to stay in school, graduate, and become more productive citizens when they are involved in extra curricular activities and after school programs like sports, theater, debate and music.”
The link to the full article listing each state's award recipient can be found here.

Bearcats Give Back
Today many of the Binghamton Wrestlers and coaching staff spent several hours volunteering and helping flood victims. Coaches and wrestlers spent the day assisting the Red Cross & National Guard in the closure of one emergency shelter and readying displaced individuals and families for transportation to a new shelter; helping to load and unload donations at a local charity; and helping several individual families begin to clean up the damage in their homes. Some photos from the day are below.
